Sgan Cohen Michael (1944-1999) Israeli artist and art historian. After studying art history and philosophy at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Sgan Cohen pursued graduate studies in the United States. His protracted absence from Israel strengthened his feelings for Jewish and Israeli subjects, while exposing him to American cultural currents of the 1960s. His work is both very personal (Sgan Cohen himself serving as the central image in much of his work) and at the same time highly intellectual and conceptual, dealing with the significance of Art, language, Jewish tradition and the relationship between all these and current Israeli reality.
