Blake William (1757-1827)
British romantic poet and artist. Blake`s early art influences were the works of Raphael, Michelangelo and Albrecht Dürer. His affection for the Bible was accompanied by hostility for the established Church, his eccentric beliefs further influenced by Swedenborg`s mysticism and the unfolding of the Romantic Movement around him. Out of these various sources he created his own mythology, based mainly upon the Bible and Greek and British mythology.
His artwork includes painting in a variety of media, etching and engraving. Much of his work was published as illustrations in his own books and those of other authors, including Milton`s Paradise Lost and The Book of Job.
