Donatello (Donato di Niccolע di Betto Bardi) (1386-1466) Florentine sculptor, one of the most accomplished and influential in Italy of the 15th century. He acquired his artistic training in the studio of the Florence Cathedral under Ghiberti. Donatello`s style is monumental, emotional and multi-faceted. He sculpted by commission saints and characters from the Old Testament for various cathedrals and churches. He used a special technique, "like painting on marble", a relief so shallow, it resembled a painting more than a sculpture. His sculptures are in the style of the ancient Greek and Roman sculptures.
